Why is my hamster shaking?

It is normal for your hamster to shake from time to time. This may be a normal reaction to stress or illness. If your hamster shakes frequently or if you have other symptoms, consult your veterinarian.

Possible causes of tremor in hamsters

Tremors in hamsters are common and can have several causes. They can be due to:

  • to a disease
  • to a stress
  • to a nutritional deficiency
  • to intoxication.

Diseases

Stress

Hamsters are very sensitive animals to stress and changes in their environment. Shaking can be a symptom of excessive stress. Possible causes of stress in hamsters include sudden changes in temperature, noise, changes in the environment and the presence of other animals.

A nutritional deficiency

Nutritional deficiencies are another possible cause of tremors in hamsters. Hamsters need a balanced diet to stay healthy. Nutritional deficiencies can be caused by poor diet, for example if hamsters do not eat enough vegetables and fruits. Nutritional deficiencies can also be caused by poor absorption of nutrients, such as intestinal malabsorption.

Poisoning

Poisoning is another possible cause of tremors in hamsters. Hamsters are very sensitive to toxic substances in the environment, such as pesticides or cleaning chemicals. Poisoning can also be caused by eating toxic foods or plants.

Prevention of tremor in hamsters

Hamsters are particularly prone to diseases of the central nervous system, including tremor. This disease can be caused by several factors as we have seen previously, including stress.

Keep stress levels low in hamsters. Make sure you create and maintain a calm, stable environment around your pet. If you notice that your hamster is more agitated than usual, try to calm it down by offering it a small treat or gently stroking it.

Nutrition also plays an important role in preventing tremors in hamsters. Provide them with a balanced diet rich in vitamins. Foods rich in vitamin E are particularly beneficial for hamsters. You can also give them hamster food supplements, which often contain vitamin E.

Finally, always keep an eye on your hamster's wounds. Wounds can cause infections, which in turn can lead to tremors. If you notice a wound, clean it immediately with soap and water. Then apply an herbal antiseptic and, if necessary, cover the wound with a bandage.
